LSU softball is moving on. The Tigers went 3-0 in the Baton Rouge Regional to punch a ticket to the super regional round. LSU is two wins away from reaching its first Women's College World Series since 2017.
Standing in the way of LSU and the WCWS is Alabama, the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. LSU will have to hit the road and head to Tuscaloosa next weekend for a best-of-three series.
LSU made it through the regional without adversity. LSU outscored its regional opponents 23-2 across the three games, capped off by a 7-2 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday. The victory marked LSU's first regional win since 2024 after LSU fell in the first round last year.
LSU leaves the regional round with a 40-18 record, making it four-straight 40-win campaigns for Beth Torina's squad.
Here are five takeaways from LSU's win in the Baton Rouge Regional.
After last year's regional loss, LSU's breezy weekend in Baton Rouge was anxiety-free. LSU shut out Akron in the first game, with Jayden Heavener throwing six scoreless innings. In the second game, LSU scored three runs and didn't look back, making it back-to-back shutouts to open the regional. Virginia Tech took a two-run lead in the third game, but that was it for the Hokies. LSU was quick to respond and led the rest of the way.
The LSU pitchers delivered. I mentioned Jayden Heavener's six-inning shutout in Game 1. In Game 2, it was Cece Celuura who threw a two-hit shutout. She only needed 73 pitches to complete six innings. And in Game 3, Patyn Monticelli allowed two runs, but only one was earned. She tossed a complete game and didn't issue a single walk. LSU got ace-like performances from all three starters. The staff has needed momentum heading into the Super Regional.
At the plate, LSU was led by Kylee Edwards. She totaled five hits and drove in five runs across the three games. In LSU's first win over Virginia Tech, Edwards reached base three times, notching two hits and a walk. She recorded an extra base hit in all three games of the regional while providing strong defense at shortstop.
It's also worth noting Sierra Daniel, who doubled three times in Game 1.
