The Virginia Tech Hokies 2026 softball season is over. The Hokies entered Sunday needing to defeat LSU twice in the Baton Rouge Regional to remain alive in the NCAA Softball Tournament. Tech had lost to LSU on Friday, but staged in impressive come-from-behind win over Akron on Saturday to set up another showdown against the Tigers.
The Hokies got off to a good start when Addison Foster doubled to begin the game. Jordan Lynch followed with an RBI single to give Virginia Tech an early 1-0 lead. Foster drove in another run in the second inning, making it a 2-0 game.
Unfortunately, things fell apart in the bottom of the third, when LSU scored seven runs to take a 7-2 lead. That would close out the scoring in this game, and it’s all the Tigers would need to send the Hokies home. Freshman pitcher Bree Carrico had a dominant season, but struggled on Sunday, allowing eight hits and four runs in 2.2 innings. She did not strike out one batter. Carrico’s first season ends with an impressive 15-2 record and 1.88 ERA.

Emma Mazzarone relieved Carrico, pitching two innings and allowing two hits, three walks and two runs. Avery Layton closed out the game, pitching 2.1 innings.
Virginia Tech’s terrific 2026 ends with a 48-12 record, including an 18-6 mark in ACC play.
Outside of the comeback against Akron, Virginia Tech’s bats were mostly quiet in the Baton Rouge Regional. The Hokies couldn’t have picked a worse time to go cold.
It’s fair to ask if things would’ve turned out differently if Tech had hosted a regional, which many believed they should have. Instead, the Hokies see another remarkable regular season followed by postseason disappointment. What will it take for the Hokies to elevate to the next level?
While the ending was disappointing, congratulations to the Lady Hokies on such a great season.
