Jan. 23—MITCHELL — The Hanson Classic returns to the Corn Palace on Saturday for the 44th edition of the boys high school basketball showcase.
A seven-game slate starts at 11 a.m. and is set to feature many of the top teams and talents from across the state. Here are three things to know about each of the pairings.
Hanson vs. White River
* Like the girls basketball program last week, the host Hanson boys will help tip off the classic in Game 1 this year. Meanwhile, White River is back in the opening time slot for the second year in a row.
* The MaxPreps high school basketball games database has record of two meetings between the Beavers and Tigers since 2005-06, with the teams splitting the two contests. White River won the most recent matchup back on Feb. 14, 2015.
* In their past five Hanson Classic games, the Beavers are 4-1. That includes a three-game win streak entering Saturday.
Sioux Valley vs. Dakota Valley
* The first of several recent Hanson Classic rematches, Sioux Valley and Dakota Valley played during the 2023 showcase. The Panthers defeated the Cossacks 82-57 during a 26-0 run to the Class A state title.
* Points could be in ample supply for this one, as the Cossacks and Panthers are two of the top-seven scoring teams in Class A. Both average at least 64.9 points per game.
* Sioux Valley is No. 5 in the Class A seed-point standings but is not receiving votes in the media poll. Dakota Valley received two votes this week, though the Panthers are No. 41 based on seed points.
Parkston vs. Lyman
* Parkston is ranked No. 10 in Class B in the latest media poll, and Lyman is closely behind at No. 11 as the top team receiving votes outside the top 10. In the seed-point standings, the Trojans and Raiders are No. 4 and No. 9, respectively.
* Both teams have been to the Corn Palace already this season. Parkston beat Dupree at the Hoop City Classic on Dec. 29. Lyman lost to Freeman at the Hoop City Classic on Dec. 29, but then took down Bridgewater-Emery in the Midwest Miracles Classic on Jan. 3.
* MaxPreps doesn't have record of a meeting between the Trojans and Raiders since at least 2005-06. Certainly, part of that has to do with Parkston being a longtime Class A program until moving to Class B last season.
Wessington Springs vs. Freeman
* The first of four ranked-versus-ranked battles from the South Dakota Prep Media polls to close out this year's slate features Class B No. 5 Wessington Springs and No. 7 Freeman. Notably, the Flyers come in riding a six-game win streak.
* Saturday will mark Freeman's third of four trips to the Corn Palace this season. The Flyers already beat Lyman, a ranked Class B squad at the time, in the Hoop City Classic on Dec. 29. They also lost to Class A Pine Ridge at the Midwest Miracles Classic on Jan. 3, which is Freeman's most recent defeat.
* MaxPreps has no record of a meeting between the Spartans and Flyers since at least 2005-06.
Viborg-Hurley vs. Hamlin
* The last time these two programs met was also at the Corn Palace during the 2024 DWU Classic. On that occasion, Hamlin routed Viborg-Hurley 81-39 and went on to win the Class A boys basketball championship.
* Viborg-Hurley stands at No. 1 in Class B in the most recent media poll, with Hamlin at No. 6 in Class A. While the Cougars are tops in the Class B seed-point standings, the Chargers are No. 3 in Class A by seed points.
* Based on opponent win percentage (.645), Hamlin has played the most difficult schedule in Class A so far. For that reason, the Chargers are No. 3 in the seed-point standings as the top one-loss team.
Lennox vs. St. Thomas More
* In the most recent media poll, St. Thomas More was ranked No. 4, with Lennox at No. 9. The seed-point standings tell a different story, with the Cavaliers at No. 10 and the Orioles at No. 17.
* These two programs haven't met since the 2019 Class A state quarterfinals. They've only played once during the regular season (Jan. 14, 2018) since 2006, per the MaxPreps database.
* Lennox has already been to the Corn Palace once this season, losing to Jonesboro (Ga.) at the Hoop City Classic on Dec. 31.
West Central vs. Clark/Willow Lake
* Rounding out the slate is a clash between the No. 1-ranked Trojans and No. 3 Cyclones. West Central (12-0) and Clark/Willow Lake (11-0) are the last two remaining undefeated teams in Class A. Both have eight wins over teams above .500 so far.
* In the seed-point standings, CWL is actually the No. 1 team, with West Central at No. 2.
* The Trojans and Cyclones last met in 2022, also at the Hanson Classic. On that occasion, West Central claimed a 68-53 victory.
