Jan. 10—MITCHELL — Pairings for the 43rd annual Hanson Classic featuring girls basketball at the Corn Palace are set for Saturday, Jan. 17.
The event will showcase 16 of the top teams from Class A and Class B, with 12 ranked in their respective top-10s and a 13th receiving votes in the latest South Dakota Prep Media basketball polls from Jan. 5. Those 13 teams have just 10 total losses between them as of Jan. 9.
This year's Class A contingent is particularly strong, with four of the top five teams in the poll set to be in attendance, headlined by 2025 state runner-up Mahpiya Luta, the top-ranked squad. Others from the Class A rankings include No. 2 Lennox, No. 3 Hamlin, No. 5 Dakota Valley, No. 7 Wagner and No. 10 Mobridge-Pollock, plus receiving votes St. Thomas More.
Meanwhile, all six Class B representatives are currently ranked. No. 2 Lyman leads the way, joined by No. 3 Parkston, No. 5 Ethan, No. 6 Harding County, No. 8 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and No. 10 Corsica-Stickney.
Of note, this year's slate also includes one out-of-state team: Woodbury Central out of Moville, Iowa.
Tipping off the slate at 10 a.m. will be host Hanson and Woodbury Central, followed by Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and Elk Point-Jefferson at 11:30 a.m. The first ranked-versus-ranked clash of the day comes at 1 p.m. with Corsica-Stickney battling Harding County, then Lyman duels Mobridge-Pollock at 2:30 p.m. St. Thomas More and Dakota Valley take the court at 4 p.m.
A rematch of the 2023 Class A championship takes center stage at 5:30 p.m., as Wagner faces off against Hamlin. Parkston and Ethan meet up at 7 p.m., with a Class A No. 1-versus-No. 2 showdown between Mahpiya Luta and Lennox serving as the 8:30 p.m. nightcap.
Admission for the showcase is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
