Jan. 17—MITCHELL — Matchups for the 44th annual Hanson Classic featuring high school boys basketball at the Corn Palace have been announced for Saturday, Jan. 24.
The showcase will feature 16 of the top teams from Class A and Class B, with eight ranked in their respective top-10s and three more receiving votes in the latest South Dakota Prep Media basketball polls from Jan. 12.
The Class A representation is particularly strong, with four of the top six teams in the media poll set to be in attendance, including newly minted No. 1 West Central. Others from the Class A rankings include No. 3 Clark/Willow Lake, No. 4 St. Thomas More, No. 6 Hamlin and No. 10 Lennox, in addition to Dakota Valley, which is receiving votes.
Meanwhile, all three Class B representatives are currently ranked, once again headlined by the top-ranked squad, Viborg-Hurley. No. 6 Wessington Springs and No. 8 Freeman will also be in action, plus Parkston and Lyman, which are both receiving votes.
Host Hanson tips off the first game against White River at 10 a.m., with Ethan against Leola/Frederick to follow at 11:30 a.m. Sioux Valley and Dakota Valley take the court at 1 p.m., and Parkston duels Lyman at 2:30 p.m.
The first ranked matchup of the day pits Wessington Springs against Freeman at 4 p.m., then a cross-class ranked battle features Viborg-Hurley challenging Hamlin.
A pair of Class A ranked clashes round out the slate, first with Lennox and St. Thomas More meeting up at 7 p.m. The nightcap features a pair of current unbeatens as West Central collides with Clark/Willow Lake at 8:30 p.m.
Admission for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
