For me it is more about bodies and talent.

Here is the room right now

Dalvin Tomlinson - Some people want to cut him, I disagree.
Walter Nolen - Injured, might be out for the year.
Darius Robinson - 3rd year, but has not made a big impact
Dante Stills - 4th year, limited impact
Bilal Nichols - Has not been good in AZ. Another cut candidate
Zachary Carter - yeah

This is a bad collection of players which is why I can't understand why people want to cut Tomlinson because he is the best player out of that group. And it is not a bad draft to add DL players but most of the draft guys are more space eaters than pass rushers.
Cutting Tomlinson would be monumentally stupid. He's a run stopper. He will not get you sacks or QB pressure. He does his job well, when there isn't a void of talent around him. He is a solid part of a DT rotation.

Robinson? Yeesh. Nichols? Should be gone. Stills? Good rotational guy. And the Nolen injury.

Right now, we have a good space eater DT, a solid rotational DT, a possible Big John who likely isn't playing much this season, and a JAG or worse. That is a putrid room. Let's not make it worse.

My problem with Tomlinson is he was pretty much ineffective last season. I don't see how an aging player who underperformed will suddenly get better this year. That's hopium at it's finest.

I'd rather have a 100 year old Calais back over Tomlinson. At least Calais lived up to and exceeded expectations last season.
Disagree. Hard disagree. He did fine stuffing the run when he wasn't surrounded by doggy doo and before all the injuries crushed the talent (what there is) on the D. Perhaps it's your expectations that were off? Were you expecting a pass rusher with him? That's not his game.

I never expected him to be a major force in the passing game. However I did come in with expectations that he would massively disrupt the run game when teams tried to run between the tackles. From what I saw last season he was no longer that force in the middle. There is no way to justify paying him $16.2M next year.

Right here you see him getting tossed to the ground like a rag doll by the RG and allowing Jacobs to score easily.

Deranged take. All I'm saying is that the roster is better, not good.

Hey - guess which team is ranked DEAD LAST?!? Only Cards stans will defend Monti. In 3 years he has built which is widely considered the least competitive roster in football.

Monti’s performance is indefensible at this point but someone will pop up and vape for him because 1-2 draft picks worked out.

If I thought this was a playoff team he’d be worth it. I’d rather take a shot at some younger guys who might offer long term solutions. This along with Campbell probably exiting leaves a huge hole indeed. I’m thinking they take a shot at getting more for their money long term.

So a run stuffing DT didn't make an impact on a team that won 3 games. He was one dude on one of the worst defenses in the NFL whose skill is clogging lanes and not getting after the QB. Maybe it was the situation and not the guy who was a good player before.

What younger guys? What FAs? Another example of the constant hamster wheel. An extra 9.4 mil cutting Tomlinson isn't going to fix what their 42 mil in cap space can't.

Cut SMB? Sure...there are plenty of young, highly drafted CBs on the roster who can step in.

Cut Conner? Sure, RBs are a dime a dozen in a lot of ways. Easy spot to fill especially with him coming off injury.

Cut Nichols? Probably have to decide between him and Tomlinson as they fill the same space. I would choose Dalvin.

Cut ADG? Sure. I would rather see Simon playing anyways.

Cut Evan Brown? Maybe. Depends who you are going to sign and how much you believe in Gaines and Adams.

This list was so close to correct until we got here. Simon is a special teams player on a playoff team.

Evan Brown is a good sixth lineman you’re not going to get better for the money.

They save $14.5M if they designate him as a Post June 1st cut. That is a considerable chunk of change.

Worst: Dl Dalvin Tomlinson

Arizona’s defensive line spending spree also included Tomlinson, but he didn’t live up to his two-year, $29 million deal. Tomlinson recorded a career-low 43.2 overall PFF grade with only 14 pressures on 555 total snaps.

More of an indictment on ADG than Simon. I should amend to...I would rather see Simon playing special teams than ADG.

I am fine with the OL coach making a decision on Evan Brown either way. I agree the Cardinals could do way worse.

Can we find a good replacement for less than that amount?
Here is the thing...there isn't a DL guy in free agency that you are paying 14.5 mil, and there is no reason the Cardinals can't just sign a 7 mil guy to play along side Tomlinson for one year. It doesn't have to be an either/or choice. The Cardinals have the financials to keep Dalvin and sign DL FAs and draft DL players.
