Gautam Gambhir breaks silence on Sanju Samson snub after India's record T20 collapse
Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has finally addressed the decision to bench Sanju Samson in favour of rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the third T20I against England and revealed that he has already had a chat with the batsman regarding his spot in the team.
The setback came at Trent Bridge, where India were shot out for a mere 76 runs while chasing England's total of 201, their second-lowest score ever recorded in the format.
That collapse resulted in a crushing 125-run loss, the first time the reigning world champions have been beaten by a margin exceeding a hundred runs. It was in the aftermath of this defeat that Gambhir chose to break his silence on the Samson situation.
According to the coach, there is no permanent rule keeping Samson out of contention for the remainder of the series, despite his recent lean patch with the bat.
The wicketkeeper-batter had managed scores of just 5 and 0 during the Ireland leg, followed by a solitary run in a rain-hit series opener against England in Chester-le-Street.

That string of low scores paved the way for Sooryavanshi's introduction in the second match at Manchester, a game India ultimately lost by four wickets while defending 190. However, Gambhir made clear that any discussion around Samson's place in the side was a private matter handled directly between player and coach.
“The first thing is that regarding the clarity Sanju Samson needed, he has been given that from my side. That’s a conversation strictly between the player and the head coach. That conversation is not going to come outside,” Gambhir told reporters after the latest defeat.
He was, however, quick to stress that Samson's past contributions to Indian cricket remain highly valued, even as the batter was left out of the squad picked for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
“Regarding Sanju, we are very clear what he has done for India has been phenomenal and sometimes you just have to look at the form of a certain player. There is no hard and fast rule that he cannot make a comeback in this series," he said.
The coach maintained that no player, regardless of reputation, holds an automatic spot in the side, and that selections are ultimately dictated by the team's need to deliver results rather than sentiment or past form.
“International cricket is about results, so whatever we feel is the best combination to give us that result, we play that combination and that playing XI. I’ve always been a big believer that everyone needs to earn their place and the right to play for India," Gambhir added.

WATCH: 'We want Sanju' chants reverberate around Trent Bridge
As Gautam Gambhir was making his way out of the stadium towards the team bus, a barrage of fans started chanting "We want Sanju". However, the coach remained stoic and quietly walked away from the furious fans demanding the inclusion of Samson.

Beyond the Samson debate, India's broader struggles in the format have become impossible to ignore. Tuesday's defeat pushed England 2-0 ahead in the five-match series, with the first game having been washed out entirely.
It also marked India's fourth consecutive completed T20I defeat, a slump that began with a series loss in Ireland and has only deepened since. Sooryavanshi himself managed just 13 before falling early in the chase, which has further fuelled the clamouring for Samson.

The Bigger Picture: Clarity is good, but results matter more
Gambhir deserves some credit for handling a sensitive selection call with maturity, choosing dignity over public spectacle by keeping the Samson conversation private.
That's the right way to do things. Dropping a senior player deserves respect, not a media trial. But clarity alone won't fix India's deeper problem: a batting unit that has now collapsed repeatedly under pressure.
Backing youth prodigies like Sooryavanshi is a reasonable long-term bet, but not at the cost of ignoring a pattern of failure. If India continue losing by margins like this, the conversation will quickly shift from who's batting where to whether the team's overall approach needs a serious rethink.
