Just stumbled on to this: http://articles.latimes.com/1990-02-06/sports/sp-409_1_joe-bugel. Read down towards the bottom and look at the other candidate names. Bugel was selected over, among others, Mike Holmgren and...Bill Belichick! I have no recollection of this even though I was living in Phoenix at the time (and recall anxiously reading the "AZ Republic" for news of the new coaching hire).

in those days we could have hired Bill and still failed.

True, true. Even the Brownies did poorly when he coached 'em (although the fallout for their impending move to Baltimore really wrecked that situation).

The sad thing is Bugel & Stallings were quality HC's who were doomed to fail because of Mr B IMO! Stallings in particular had a great staff of teachers & both those coaches had good talent that wasn't allowed to make it a playoff caliber ones because of the owner. Same can be said of Jim Hanifan.

If only things would've been different & Mr B had been as dedicated to winning like his son instead of the bottom line. Good players & great failures in all aspects of what it takes to consistently win.

That's what I didn't get why Mr. B would not spend the money for a winning team. Doesn't winning more games make you more money? I just never understood his concept.

pretty simple concept actually.

ASU agreed to split the parking fees with the team,..and then refused to do so for twenty years...when finally ordered by the court,...they set up student shills all over the parking areas to convince fans "The Cardinals" had doubled their parking fees.

Bidwill moved the team to Arizona based upon a handshake deal that a stadium would be built for the team...then for twenty years the state of Arizona screwed them out of the stadium they agreed to build.

At the time it was built, UOP had the highest team financial contribution of any stadium ever built.....
also, at the time,...The Arizona Cardinals were the only team in the NFL in which the team was the owners sole source of income.

The fact is the state of Arizona and ASU screwed the Cardinals at every turn,...and most owners would have moved their team again.....they really should have...

but the facts also support, that as soon as the team had revenue streams from the stadium(boxes, concessions, etc) which they did not get at SDS....they started spending money and became competitive almost immediately...... Just as Bill Bidwill said they would when they moved here..

many fans with lesser knowledge try to blame it all on Billy B... but the truth holds out that he was and is a man of his word, that exercised incredible patience with a state that proved they did not deserve to host his team.

The story I recall about Belichick's interview with the Cards is that they asked him how he could help promote the team outside of winning. That question tells you everything you need to know about how the team was run in those days.

Well isn't that because Billy B would accept the states deal? John F long offered them (The state) the land for the stadium for free as long as the stadium was named after him. The land was behind the old West Ridge Mall and later became Desert Sky Pavilion.

The hoodie only became a genus when he found Tom Brady. Before that he was fired as many times as any other head coach.

the city of Phoenix also wanted a cut of the revenue...as it turned out,...the team still got land for free...unless you count hiring Clancy Pendergast as DC payment for the land.
Every proposal that came up,..either tempe or phoenix would fight against it because they were not getting a cut of it......... which is why the team moved out to Glendale and thus left both tempe and phoenix out of their pockets.

you can hate on Bill Bidwill all you want... but the simplicity of it was that he was an honest man trying to deal with the thieves and criminals that govern in the valley and none of them wanted the team to get a stadium unless they were going to profit from it.

Dollar Bill is an honest man who IIRC was the first to bring diversity to the NFL in the FO and is very charitable. Having said that he was always naïve and I lousy business man and NFL owner. Sorry but there are simply too many stories of how poorly he ran the franchise from making players pay for beverages and socks to forcing his opinion on draft picks.

The fact that he accepted a hand shake deal on a new stadium is all the evidence one needs to determine he was in over his head as an NFL owner.

Twenty years in the dessert and Bill can't get a stadium and then Michael comes into the picture and it took what, two years for him to get it done? No Michael and no stadium and ergo no change in how this team performs, no SB appearance and yet another decade of 5-11 seasons.
