The Indiana State men’s basketball team made it official Tuesday — the Sycamores will play an exhibition preseason contest at Butler and a nonconference regular-season contest at Kansas.
Indiana State will face Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, Oct. 10. Additional information regarding tipoff time, tickets, and streaming availability will come at a later time.
The Sycamores will travel to Kansas’ Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The two schools have never faced each other in men’s basketball, according to the ISU record book.
The Jayhawks finished 24-11 overall and 12-6 in Big 12 play under legendary coach Bill Self. The Jayhawks made it to the round of 32 in last season’s NCAA Tournament, bowing out to No. 5 St. John’s 67-65. The Jayhawks defeated No. 13 Cal Baptist 68-60 in the opening round of the tournament.
The Butler exhibition allows Sycamore coach Matthew Graves another chance at an alma mater homecoming. Graves spent 17 combined seasons at Butler between his coaching and playing days. As a player, he finished his Butler career with 994 total points.
This will be the first time Graves returns to Hinkle as an opposing head coach. He missed last year’s ISU exhibition game at Butler — a win by the Bulldogs — because of heart surgery in mid-October.
“I am extremely thankful to Coach Nored for reaching out and asking about running the game back from last season,” said Graves in a news release by the team. “Obviously, Butler holds a special place for me and to be able to coach in Hinkle Fieldhouse is a thrilling experience.”
Butler’s new head coach Ronald Nored and Graves dates back many years. As a BU assistant, Graves coached Nored through Nored’s time as a player at Butler. Nored, a BU 2012 graduate, worked together on the Bulldogs staff as assistants from 2009-2012 as the team compiled an 89-21 record in the three seasons.
A season ago when the Indiana State traveled to Hinkle, the Sycamores fell 105-80. The game’s format included 12-minute quarters.
Butler finished last season 16-16 overall and 7-13 in Big East Conference play under then head coach Thad Matta.
