The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun the search for their next head coach after Mike Tomlin stepped down from the position after 19 years — with our head coach scouting reports giving fans a better idea of which candidates to look out for.

Taking a look at head coach record, coaching background, potential fit with the Steelers, and whether or not Pittsburgh should sign him, here’s a look at the scouting report for former Jets head coach and current San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

Head coach record

  • Regular season: 20-36, .357 win percentage
  • Playoffs: N/A

Coaching background

  • Defensive Assistant — Michigan State, 2002-2003
  • Defensive Assistant — Central Michigan, 2004
  • Defensive Assistant — Georgia, 2005
  • Defensive Intern — Houston Texans, 2005
  • Defensive Quality Control — Houston Texans, 2006-2008
  • Assistant Linebackers Coach — Houston Texans, 2009-2010
  • Defensive Quality Control — Seattle Seahawks, 2011-2013
  • Linebackers Coach — Jacksonville Jaguars, 2014-2016
  • Defensive Coordinator — San Francisco 49ers, 2017-2020
  • Head Coach — New York Jets, 2021-2024
  • Defensive Coordinator — San Francisco 49ers, 2025

Potential fit with Pittsburgh

With over 23 years of experience, the defensive-minded Saleh would give the Steelers a head coach fit they’re used to. His inexperience on the offensive side of the ball means Pittsburgh would need to hit a home run at offensive coordinator, but his overall demeanor and emphasis on defensive discipline check a lot of the boxes the Steelers had with Tomlin.

Should Steelers sign him?

While Saleh is a solid option, he’d be better suited as a defensive coordinator than a head coach for Pittsburgh — and it’s unlikely he’d be interested in that role. Everything Saleh brings to the table, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and potential head coach candidate Brian Flores does just a little better, making this a difficult sell in terms of hiring him as a head coach.
