The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun the search for their next head coach after Mike Tomlin stepped down from the position after 19 years — with our head coach scouting reports giving fans a better idea of which candidates to look out for.
Taking a look at head coach record, coaching background, potential fit with the Steelers, and whether or not Pittsburgh should sign him, here’s a look at the scouting report for former Jets head coach and current San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
With over 23 years of experience, the defensive-minded Saleh would give the Steelers a head coach fit they’re used to. His inexperience on the offensive side of the ball means Pittsburgh would need to hit a home run at offensive coordinator, but his overall demeanor and emphasis on defensive discipline check a lot of the boxes the Steelers had with Tomlin.
While Saleh is a solid option, he’d be better suited as a defensive coordinator than a head coach for Pittsburgh — and it’s unlikely he’d be interested in that role. Everything Saleh brings to the table, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and potential head coach candidate Brian Flores does just a little better, making this a difficult sell in terms of hiring him as a head coach.
