Visitation will make its first state championship game appearance Friday on the University of Minnesota campus, a result few likely saw coming — well, outside of those within the program.
“We knew we had a special team coming into this,” Blazers co-coach Dan Jameson told the state high school league. “I think we are showing that.”
Indeed. The sixth-seeded Blazers upset second-seeded Jackson County Central, 2-1, Wednesday in North Mankato to snap the Huskies’ 23-game winning streak. Visitation has now downed the second- and third-seeded teams in the Class 2A field.
No. 1 Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial awaits at 3 p.m. Friday.
“Our team loves the challenge of playing those tough opponents,” Jameson said.
The Mendota Heights school does so with the confidence knowing it has an ace in the circle. Junior hurler Ceceilia Lamey was again excellent Wednesday, striking out 11 in her four-hit complete game. Offensively, she also had two hits and knocked in a run.
