The Cretin-Derham Hall girls lacrosse team is making its way back to the state tournament, advancing to state for the fifth time and first since 2014. Stillwater is well used to playing for a state title, but is still looking for it’s first championship.
Both teams advanced to next week’s state tournament via section wins on Wednesday night. The state tournament begins June 9 at White Bear Lake High School.
Cretin-Derham Hall, the No. 1 seed in Section 3, cruised to an 11-4 win against No. 2 seed Park at Cretin-Derham High School. The Raiders scored four times in the first quarter on the way to victory. Park was the section champion last season.
Stillwater made the state tournament for the fifth straight season with a 6-4 win against White Bear Lake in Section 4 at Stillwater High School, again a matchup of the top two seeds as the Ponies were the top seed. Stillwater was the runner-up to Prior Lake last season and will be making it’s 14th state tournament appearance. The Ponies have only missed the tournament twice (2019 and 2020) since 2011.
Wayzata (Section 5) and Edina (Section 6) also advanced Wednesday. Wayzata beat Maple Grove 11-5 and Edina won 11-10 against Prior Lake. They joined Tuesday’s winners Lakeville South (Section 1), Minnetonka (Section 2). The Section 7 final between Chisago Lakes and Centennial, and the Section 8 title game between Buffalo and St. Michael-Albertville are on Thursday.
