Visitation led the Class 2A state title game 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth frame. But Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial delivered when pressure was at its highest.
A one-out triple to left center put Nettie Parsons at third base. With two outs, Sydney Kramer singled to right to knot the game. Another base hit and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Grace Thorson induced a walk to put the Knights on top.
Parsons shut the door with a one, two, three seventh inning to complete the Knights’ perfect season (27-0) with a state title, two years after Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial fell in the title game.
Friday’s 3-2 defeat at the University of Minnesota marked Visitation’s first-ever softball state title game apperance, and the Blazers — who reached the title game by upsetting the second- and third-seeded teams in Class 2A this week — performed admirably. Cecelia Lamey completed a sensation tournament in the circle with an eight-strikeout performance in which she surrendered just four hits.
Lamey allowed a run in the first inning and no more until the sixth. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Charlotte Ferguson, Abigail Hemauer and Anna Lloyd strung together three consecutive two-out hits to score twice and give Visitation (23-4) the lead.
Parsons threw a complete game for the Knights, allowing just six hits.
