Spurs sign 6-foot-8 former 76ers star to assist Victor Wembanyama originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Antonio Spurs didn’t wait terribly long following the official start of free agency (Tuesday at 6.pm.) to make a move they deemed necessary for a successful 2026-27 campaign.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Spurs signed a 6-foot-8 former Philadelphia 76ers star to assist Victor Wembanyama going forward.
“Just in: Free agent forward Tobias Harris has agreed to a two-year, $31 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs,” ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on X/Twitter. “Harris exits the (Detroit) Pistons after helping lead a franchise turnaround and now joins a young contending team in the Western Conference.”
Harris, whom many expected to depart the Detroit Pistons after two seasons, is a tremendous get for the Spurs. The Tennessee product played an integral role in Detroit’s 60-win 2025-26 campaign, as the versatile small forward/power forward was a solid spot-up shooter and face-up weapon for the Pistons all year long.
The 33-year-old contributed 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, shooting 46.9% from the field and 36.8% from deep on a Pistons squad that was one win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Harris should fit well with a Spurs team that could use a well-rounded veteran forward to accelerate its win-now process. It remains to be seen how it’ll all play out next season.
