Why Victor Wembanyama should be smiling after Spurs’ latest offseason decision originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are fresh off the NBA Finals disappointment. However, the Spurs are making some offseason moves as the franchise has hired Billy Donovan as its lead assistant under head coach Mitch Johnson.

The move is a big career shift for Donovan, who will serve as an assistant coach for the first time since his stint at Kentucky in the early 1990s.

Don Harris, Sports Director and weekday sports anchor for News 4 San Antonio, believes the addition of Donovan is even more impactful than the Spurs' draft decisions or the arrival of Tobias Harris. Harris also suggested that the hire bears the influence of franchise legend Greg Popovich, saying he would "bet" Popovich's fingerprints are all over the decision.

Harris later expanded on why he believes Donovan is an ideal fit alongside Wembanyama and Johnson.

“Donovan was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last summer. Vast depth of knowledge and experience on both ends. will have plenty of ideas, including for Victor‘s offensive development. And game management expertise to help Mitch avoid issues like we saw in the finals,” Harris tweeted.

Donovan will now work closely with Wembanyama as San Antonio continues its pursuit of an NBA championship.

Meanwhile, Johnson is coming off an outstanding first full season as head coach, guiding the Spurs to 62 regular-season wins and a Western Conference championship. However, the team's struggles with late-game execution and in-series adjustments during the Finals defeat to the New York Knicks exposed areas for improvement, making the addition of a Hall of Fame coach with more than 30 years of head coaching experience a big boost to the coaching staff.
