Spurs officially beat out Lakers for historic $330 million ex-76ers star forward originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Failing to fill their glaring power-forward void following their NBA Finals loss would have been a devastating blow to a San Antonio Spurs squad that many believed needed to make one marquee move before the start of the 2026-27 season.
Impressively, the five-time NBA champions did just that by beating out the Los Angeles Lakers, a historic $330 million ex-Philadelphia 76ers star forward on July 1 (according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Lakers expressed interest in the 33-year-old veteran). The deal is now official.
“ The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed Tobias Harris,” the franchise’s press release stated Monday. “Per team policy, terms of the contract were not announced.”
“Harris, appeared in 63 games (all starts) for the Detroit Pistons last season and averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.92 steals in 27.7 minutes per game. Over the course of the season, he scored 20+ points 10 times and 15+ points 24 times and posted three double-doubles.”
“Harris helped lead the Pistons back to the postseason and win their first playoff series since 2008, averaging 18.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.50 steals in 34.6 minutes during the Pistons run.”
Harris, who just passed Kobe Bryant on the all-time earnings list (his new contract pushes him up to $330 million while Bryant earned $323 million) and first made history in 2024 by becoming the first player in NBA history to eclipse $300 million without earning an All-Star nod, continues to find high-profile gigs in the big leagues,
After a positive start to his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers, Harris joined the 76ers in 2019 and was an instant impact contributor with the franchise.
After the 76ers elected to let Jimmy Butler walk after the franchise’s Eastern Conference Semifinals loss to the Toronto Raptors and give Harris a new five-year, $180 million contract, the former first-round pick formed a daunting Big Three with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.
It only lasted until 2024, though, as Harris felt compelled to ink a two-year, $52 million deal to reunite with the Pistons. While Detroit fell one win short of the Eastern Conference Finals this past season, there’s no question Harris served as a versatile two-way forward who’s an ideal veteran presence.
The Islip, New York native averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game, shooting 46.9% from the field and 36.8% from beyond the arc in 63 contests. Needless to say, Harris’ ability to defend multiple positions and stretch the floor should have the Spurs excited about his addition.
