The Seattle Mariners made a major move to their farm system Sunday night with the promotion of outfielder Lazaro Montes (No. 26 MLB Pipeline top 100) from the Double-A Arkansas Travelers to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.
The move, which was first reported by Francys Romero, comes on the heels of another dominant season at the plate for Montes when it comes to power.
In 79 games with Arkansas this season, Seattle's No. 3 overall prospect (per MLB Pipeline) slashed .234/.369/.550 with a .919 OPS. He hit 11 doubles, a triple and 25 home runs with 66 RBIs. He hit 12 of his homers in June.
Montes' promotion to Triple-A puts him on the cusp of a major league debut and he could, in practice could contribute to the team early next season, if not as soon as the home stretch of this year.
But, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound outfielder won't be the Mariners' only top 100 prospect making his way from Double-A to Triple-A.
Per a report on "X" from MLB.com's Daniel Kramer, infielder/outfielder Michael Arroyo (No. 43 MLB Pipeline; No. 4 team prospect) will also be moving from the Travelers to the Rainiers.
Whereas Montes possesses arguably the best power tool in Seattle's farm system, Arroyo possesses arguably the best pure hit tool.
In 65 games with Arkansas this season, The 5-foot-10, 160-pound utility player has slashed .287/.364/.456 with an .820 OPS and has hit 12 doubles, a triple and 10 homers with 40 RBIs and has stolen 13 bases in 15 attempts.
Arroyo's future with the team is interesting, as the Mariners have gone out of their way to find him a role he could potentially fill on the team in the future.
Before this year, Arroyo spent the majority of his career at second base, which is currently (and will likely continue to be) occupied in the major leagues by Cole Young.
This season, Arroyo has played 30 games at second base, 31 games in left field and five games at designated hitter. He also spent 43 games at shortstop with the Single-A Modesto Nuts in 2023 and 11 games at third base in 2022 with the Dominican Summer League Mariners.
Arroyo's versatile defense and plus hit tool could make him a more likely candidate than Montes to make his major league debut at some time this season, even in a utility role off the bench. However, injured player Brendan Donovan will likely take the main utility spot when he returns from a left groin strain.
It's unclear whether either will make their major league debuts by the time the season ends. However, both are on the cusp of being big league contributors and seem to be closing in on the top run of the farm system ladder that both Montes and Arroyo seemed destined for for several years now.
