Forty-four years.

That’s how long it’s been since Seaside has had an individual state golf champion. Behind a flawless back nine, senior Xanh Quang broke the drought and his name was etched into the record books. Following a first round of 75, the senior started on the 10th hole and overcame an early bogey on the 14th hole and a triple bogey on the 15th to take home a three-shot victory over Elias Long of Baker High School.

Quang shot a two-day score of six-over-par, or 150 to become the school’s first state champion since Matt Elms in 1982. In addition to Quang and Elms, Greg Elliott took home a state title in 1980 and Mitch Mooney won back-to-back titles in 1974 and 1975.

In total, Quang made five birdies over the course of 36 holes and played his final 12 holes Tuesday at one-under-par. The senior went out early before most of the other individual contenders and had to wait all afternoon to find out if his score of 150 would be good enough.

After falling two strokes back early in his round, Quang was able to hold off Long, Marist Catholic sophomore Tripp Murphy, Cascade junior Grant Hemelstrand and Marist senior Jaxen Mazur.

“I am proud of and happy for Xanh,” Seaside head coach Jim Poetsch said in a press release Tuesday. “He showed what happens when you work hard to achieve a goal. Two years ago, he was the fifth man on our team and today he is the top golfer in the state. It has been a long time since Seaside has won an individual title and I can’t think of anyone more deserving. He finishes his career with both a team and individual state championship. Only Mitch Mooney has done that before him and Mitch spent some time on the PGA Tour.”

Poetsch also credited his golfers for their bounce back effort Tuesday. After struggling mightily on Monday, the Seagulls returned to form on Tuesday and shot the fifth best score of the day. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to dig themselves out of the day one hole. The Seagulls shot 366 on Monday and came back with a 347 on day two.

“As a team we played much better Tuesday,” said Poetsch. We had the fifth best score of the day and we were ranked fifth coming into the tournament. Dexter (Jenks) had a good round. He tied his season low on the toughest course in the state on day two of the state tournament. That should propel him into the offseason where I hope he will get even more tournament experience. We lose Xanh and Landon (Nofield) after a few successful seasons with them around, but we did get some experience for Dexter, Will (Haag), Gunner (Norman) and Tobin (Santos). That will help them tremendously should we earn our way back next year.

“It will take a lot of hard work to get here losing Xanh and having two of the top three 3A teams moving up to 4A and into our league. I feel whoever wins our league next season will have a great chance of winning state.”

Marist Catholic boys claimed the title after setting the tone on day one. The Spartans shot an incredible 309 on Monday and cruised home to a 29 stroke victory over Pendleton. Marist had a two-day team score of 633, Pendleton shot a 662, Cascade carded a 681, Marshfield a 688 and St. Helens came in fifth with a 699.

For Seaside, as a team they shot a 712. Quang finished with a 150, Jenks was 30th overall with a 181, Nofield wrapped up his career with a 188 and Haag was unable to overcome the freshman jinx at state as he finished with a 195. Norman carded a 101 on Monday and then fellow junior Santos subbed in for him and shot an even 100 on Tuesday.

Seaside girls close out golf season

The Seaside girls finished ninth out of a possible 12 scoring teams at their state golf tournament.

The Lady Gulls came into the tournament ranked fifth, but were only able to shoot the ninth best score on day one, before returning to form on day two. Day one the Seagulls shot a 435, then improved by 37 strokes on Tuesday with a 398. The 398 was the fifth best score of day two.

As expected, Salem Academy crushed the competition en route to a 59-stroke victory. There was never any doubt the Crusaders were going to win the state title, the only question was by how much. It’s safe to say Salem Academy lived up to the name of the school mascot as they crusaded through the difficult course at Eagle Crest Resort finishing with a team score of 659.

Salem also had the individual girls winner as Chloe Johnston outlasted Vishaka Priyan of Catlin Gabel by one stroke to take the girls crown. Her teammate, Ellie Gladow, made it two Crusaders in the top three as she finished third.

Makenna White led Seaside home with a 24th-place finish and a total two-day score of 197. Lolly Rahl was the No. 2 golfer with a 37th place finish and a score of 207. Kylie Keranen with a 214 and Reagan Hartnett with a 215, were the final two scorers. The standout for Seaside on day two was the junior Hartnett. She led the Seagulls with a 92 and finished 19th overall in the individual category for day two.

With three juniors returning next season, the Seagulls enter 2027 with lots of experience, but will be faced with a much tougher league due to multiple 3A teams moving up to 4A.
