The Seaside boys team had a mixed week on the golf course, while rival Astoria pulled off a good upset to start off league season. On the girls side, Seaside golfers continued to shoot well to start off the season.

Seaside boys bounce back from rough day

The boys golf team at Seaside picked a good time to have what head coach Jim Poetsch described as a rough day.

After a bit of a layoff, the Seagulls traveled to Banks for another high-level tournament at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. Seaside came home 15th of 22 possible scoring teams with a 358, well off what the Seagulls were shooting last season. However, Poetsch said he believes the young team’s shooters are on the verge of figuring everything out.

Top scorer Xanh Quang shot a 79 and finished 14th for the Seagulls on Thursday, April 2. Will Haag was the second scorer with a 92, Tobin Santos shot a 93, Gunner Norman shot a 94 and Landon Nofield shot a 97.

Columbia River High School of Vancouver, Washington won the tournament with a team score of 318, while Camas High School of Washington finished second with a 325. Banks was the first Oregon school to place as they finished third with a 327.

Seaside had a chance to bounce back with a league match against St. Helens on Friday, April 3.

The Seagulls improved their score by 17 points shooting a 341 en route to their first league victory of the year.

Quang took the individual title with a 75. Seaside showed great improvements behind him as they had two of their other golfers also break into the 80s. Haag and Nofield both shot 88 to finish fourth place individually, Norman shot a 90 to finish sixth and Santos was the fifth player with a score of 104. This victory was the first step towards the Seagulls defending their Cowapa League title from last year.

“This was a big win for us to help defend the league title,” Seaside coach Jim Poetsch said in a press release Friday night. “They have a couple good freshmen and played pretty well. Xanh shot even par on the back nine to give us a 17-stroke lead and we just held on from there.

“I know most coaches think that their teams are better than they actually are, but I’ve always been a pretty good judge of my team’s talent and I think this team is much better than we’ve shown so far this season. Not that we’ve been bad, but I think we could be really good by season’s end.”

Next up for Seaside is a trip to Emerald Valley Golf Course for the Marshfield Invitational on Wednesday, April 8.

Astoria boys surprise Scappoose

Despite being down a couple of seniors, the Astoria boys golfers sprung a trap and knocked off Scappoose on Tuesday, March 31. This victory was a huge one in the league race for the Fishermen.

This match showed off the impressive depth that the Fishermen have. Despite not having a player that can shoot super low, Astoria has three to five guys capable of shooting in the high 80s-low 90s when they’re playing well.

Using Astoria Golf and Country Club as their home field advantage, the Astoria boys golfers put up a score of 95 over par to defeat Scappoose by four strokes. The Indians finished 99 over par.

Ty Cereghino led Astoria with an 87, Sawyer Rochon carded a 90, freshman Sam Bacon finished with a 103 and Kevin Dunn had a 107. Gibson Allen was the fifth player with a score of 115.

The Seaside girl golfers get the better of rivals

Last week was a battle against their Cowapa League rivals for the Seaside girls golf team.

With a strong core of golfers returning this season, the girls entered 2026 as contenders for a Cowapa League title at year’s end. Based on early returns, the Lady Gulls are positioned nicely.

The girls also took part in the Pumpkin Ridge Invitational on April Fools’ Day and finished fourth out of 12 total teams. The Seaside team was also fourth out of the seven possible scoring teams finishing behind Salem Academy, Camas (Washington) and Catlin Gabel. They finished ahead of Scappoose by three strokes and Marist Catholic by 26.

The Salem Academy team flexed its muscles with a team score of 327, Camas carded a 362 and Catlin Gabel had a 400. Seaside finished with a 425 and Scappoose went home with a 429.

The Seagulls were led Wednesday by Reagan Hartnett, who shot a 97. Her score was good enough for 14th in the individual category. Lolly Rahl carded a 100 to finish 16th and Makenna White shot a 105 to finish 20th. Hayley Archibald was the fourth scorer with a 123.

The Seaside girls returned to the range for a match against St. Helens on Friday, April 3.

With the Lions fielding just one player, the Seagulls would automatically take the win since they had five total players lined up to golf. Though only three scorers were counted for Seaside in the official column they would have shot a 421 if all four scores were added, which would have been an improvement on their last match.

White led the way with a 98, Rahl was the second scorer with a 106 and Hartnett carded a 108 as the the last official scorer that was counted. Kylie Keranen carded a 109 as the fourth player and Archibald shot a 118 as the fifth player.

The girls returned to action Monday in another Cowapa League matchup.
