The Seattle Seahawks worked out safety Ifeatu Melifonwu on Monday, per Mike Garofolo’s report.
The post specifically mentions Melifonwu is not signing immediately following the workout, but could be “in play in Seattle down the line”. The context is key here. Mandatory Minicamp is on for the next three days and all of the Seahawks’ backup safeties are either returning from injury, new, and/or young. When evaluating AJ Finley, Maxen Hook, Roney Thomas II, and Bud Clark, the organization really doesn’t know what the team has yet, quality or health wise. Today’s workout tells us they want to have their next phase’s bit of scouting done before they reach the point of making decisions based on it.
Melifonwu himself is a five-year veteran, spending 2021-2024 with the Detroit Lions and 2025 with the Miami Dolphins. He’s in a different caliber to Finley and Hook with starting experience, racking up 22 starts in 53 games, just four less than Thomas. He’s also an excellent athlete, testing in the 96.9th percentile when coming out of college in 2021. He’s got excellent size, speed and explosiveness, but lacks agility like most taller players. A quote from an NFL scout during draft time sums up his value, and likely relates to how the Seahawks see him right now:
"Physical, long and he is going to test well. For how we would use him, I think he's one of the best fits for us in the draft. I don't see any way he gets out of the second round."
If that’s what the Seahawks are after, an addition of Melifonwu could be one of the more valuable ones on a per-snap basis in the NFL. He has athletic traits that could earn him a spot in the safety rotation with Ty Okada and Bud Clark, which favors different skillsets week-to-week.
