Defensive lineman Jonah Williams was one of a handful of new additions along the New Orleans Saints front seven last offseason. He was also one of three defenders that played for new Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley earlier in their careers, joining Chris Rumph and Terrell Burgess. Williams was signed as an undrafted rookie out of Weber State by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. Staley was defensive coordinator of the Rams at the time.

Williams played most of his first four seasons with the Rams, only his rookie year under Staley, while compiling 2.5 sacks and 5 tackles for loss among 80 total stops. He ended the 2024 campaign with the Lions, however, before entering free agency. The Saints signed Williams to a one-year contract early in the free agent period because of his knowledge of Staley's system. They were also hoping to deepen a defensive line that had major struggles in 2024, something that Williams helped accomplish in his first year with New Orleans.

Jonah Williams Year in Review

  • Position: Defensive end
  • Age: 30
  • Height: 6-feet, 5 inches
  • Weight: 275 pounds
  • NFL experience: 5 years (1st with Saints)
  • 2025 season: 15 games (1 start)

Jonah Williams was among the Saints final preseason cuts despite a solid training camp. New Orleans re-signed him to their practice squad the very next day and would elevate him to the active roster in time for the regular season opener. Throughout the entire season, Williams would be an underrated part of an improved defensive front.

Williams started the season as a consistent part of the Saints line rotation and remained so all year. He played 319 defensive snaps and added another 193 on special teams. Williams made the most of his chances, recording 3 sacks, 5 QB hits, 8 pressures, and 5 tackles for loss. All were the highest of his career, as he saw action in 15 of the New Orleans games.

Jonah Williams and the Saints enter an interesting dilemma. Williams is a free agent, with New Orleans still looking to upgrade at both edge rusher and inside. Williams isn't likely to command big dollars on the open market and can play multiple positions across the New Orleans front. The Saints would be wise to attempt to bring him back to maintain quality depth in their defensive line.
