Late in free agency last offseason, the New Orleans Saints signed veteran safety Terrell Burgess. Along with Chris Rumph II and Jonah Williams, Burgess had played under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley earlier in his career. Burgess was a third round choice in the 2020 NFL draft out of Utah by the Los Angeles Rams, where Staley was the defensive coordinator at the time.

Terrell Burgess played his first three seasons with the Rams, playing in 30 games and recording 3 interceptions. Between the end of 2022 and 2024 however, he'd bounce across three teams before the Saints signed him. Burgess was expected to fill out the back of the depth chart if he made the team. Here's how it turned out.

Terrell Burgess Year in Review

  • Position: Safety
  • Age: 27
  • Height: 5-feet, 11 inches
  • Weight: 202 pounds
  • NFL experience: 5 years (1st with Saints)

▪︎ 2025 season: 16 games (0 starts) Signed in mid-May, Burgess was among the team's final preseason cuts in August but was immediately brought back to the practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster in Week 2 after a season-ending injury to Julian Blackmon, where he'd remain for the majority of the regular season. Burgess played in 16 games, matching the most of his career. He didn't get a lot of defensive snaps, but was one of the squad's main contributors on special teams.

Burgess saw more than 10 defensive snaps just three times in 2025. He had a season-high 32 defensive plays against Miami in Week 13, followed by 20 defensive snaps against Tampa Bay the following week. On the year, Burgess had 115 snaps on defense and another 205 snaps on the special teams units. He finished the season with 22 total tackles while breaking up 3 passes.

Terrell Burgess will again be a free agent in March. The New Orleans safeties seem set at the top of the depth chart with Blackmon, Justin Reid, and Jonas Sanker. There's a slim chance Burgess could be brought back for depth and special teams, but the Saints are more likely to upgrade both areas through free agency or late in the draft.
