It’s only June and the Rochester Red Wings are already thinking about the playoffs.
For the first time, possibly ever, Rochester has a chance to clinch a postseason berth before summer even begins. With six games remaining in the International League’s first half, Rochester enters the final week of the half with a six-game homestand against the Toledo Mud Hens.
Rochester (42-25) is tied for first place with the Memphis Redbirds (43-26). Rochester holds the top spot in the International League with a better win percentage.
While Rochester is closing out the first half against Toledo at home, Memphis hosts the Nashville Sounds for six games. The Sounds sit just two games back in the standings.
The last game of the first half is Sunday, June 21.
Winning the first half would guarantee the Red Wings a place in the International League Championship Series in September against the second-half winner. Plus, it would give Rochester the home-field advantage in a best-of-three league championship. The winner of that series advances to the Triple-A National Championship Game in Las Vegas.
The last time the Red Wings were in the playoffs (2013), “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke (featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams) was the No. 1 song in the U.S. After 13 years without postseason baseball, the Wings are closer than they have been in years.
The Red Wings kick off their homestand at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, under sunny skies. But rain begins to creep into the picture from Wednesday afternoon onward, according to the National Weather Service’s Buffalo office.
Weather could be the biggest factor Thursday, when showers, or even a thunderstorm, are possible, according to the current NWS forecast for Rochester. The high will be near 84. It will be breezy, with strong winds between 17—23 mph, and gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
After that, the rain clears out of the area until Sunday.
