Are the Boston Celtics going to trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo? According to recent reporting from Stein Line founder Marc Stein, the answer is a definitive maybe. Per Stein, "the Boston Celtics have not yet abandoned hope of completing a trade for The Greek Freak," with the Miami Heat currently seen as the logical leader in the chase given their aggressive pursuit of Antetokounmpo since the 2026 NBA trade deadline.
"Milwaukee's apparent determination to drag the talks out so long has created a measure of ambiguity," writes Stein in something of an understatement. As to what Boston might be offering the Bucks in any deal – to be clear, this information is framed as speculation given "a complete picture there has been harder to pinpoint" – Stein relates that "Jaylen Brown is the widely presumed centerpiece by this point along with Boston's No. 27 pick in Tuesday's draft."
He also notes that Milwaukee has interest in rookie forward Hugo Gonzalez as part of any such trade package from the Celtics for Antetokounmpo.
"The Bucks, though, undoubtedly would want a pick higher up the board than Boston's to go with its own No. 10 overall selection that will be made Tuesday in Brooklyn (...)," he adds. "The Celtics' chances of beating out Miami thus could hinge on a third team to join the transaction to take on Brown and his monster contract ($183 million over the next three seasons) and enable Milwaukee to broaden its haul."
Interestingly, Stein also notes he's heard rumors that "the Celtics, amid their ongoing Antetokounmpo interest, had already begun exploring other trade possibilities in their quest to add size and, as Brad Stevens recently put it, pressure on the rim."
