Even though the Milwaukee Bucks - Giannis Antetokounmpo that morphed into the Boston Celtics - Jaylen Brown trade saga is now weeks behind us, details of the Celtics trying to get the Greek Freak to Boston on the cheap are continuing to emerge. According to recent reporting from New York Times Minnesota Timberwolves beat writer Jon Krawczynski, the "Wolves had talks with the Celtics about Jaylen Brown" as well as the Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks about Josh Giddey and Antetokounmpo, respectively.
Per the New York Times reporter, "Brown was intriguing, but the Celtics were asking for a king’s ransom that included Gobert and heavy draft capital." Krawczynski also reports that there were internal debates in the front office of Minnesota on how Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards and Brown would fit together given both of the players are ISO-heavy players on the offensive end of the court.
Ultimately, both teams went in other directions to make their big moves of the NBA's 2026 offseason. But that was not the only Celtics - Brown trade scuttlebutt making the rounds in recent days.
During a recent guest spot by senior ESPN reporter Shams Charania on the "Pat McAfee Show", we learned that he has been hearing that the "Celtics did not want to give up Hugo Gonzalez and or Baylor Scheierman and another draft asset when the Bucks asked for that".
"That was the breakdown in that conversation. The (Celtics) didn't want to add any of the young players. Their final offer was Jaylen Brown, two first-round picks." Ultimately, Boston of course went with the Paul George trade, but these rumbles provide an interesting retrospective into what might have been for the Celtics.
