The Boston Red Sox signed Patrick Sandoval before last season, but he did not pitch at all for them in the big leagues.

Sandoval is looking to return from the left ulnar collateral ligament surgery he had in 2024. He was working toward a return last year, but a biceps injury kept him from making a return. This season, he started the year on the injured list and went on a rehab assignment in April. However, after just two rehab outings, he was shut down and placed back on the injured list.

On June 5, the Red Sox sent him back out on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester, and he has gotten some encouraging results. On June 5, he threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and issuing one walk. On Thursday night, he threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run. He also struck out three batters.

According to WooSox reporter Tommy Cassell, he topped out at 95.5 mph, which is a good sign. In 2024, which was the last season he appeared in the big leagues, his four-seam fastball and sinker sat at 93.7 mph. Given the Red Sox's current injuries and rotation, Sandoval could be an intriguing option to start games.

Garrett Crochet is injured, and his return timeline is unclear. Brayan Bello has been sent to Triple-A to work out some issues as well. The Red Sox have Sonny Gray, Connelly Early, Payton Tolle and Ranger Suarez still, but Sandoval could be a solid depth arm.
