Playing Games With the Draft

The Suns brought Josh Smith in for a second tryout following a second tryout of Harris. This could mean they are really serious, or it could mean they are trying to mess with the Hawks.

The Hawks have a new owner and a basically revamped organization. There is no reason to believe they have any idea what they are doing. Now that they lost out in the chase for Howard, what are they going to do and who will decide.

In this scenerio, the Suns may be baiting the Hawks into taking Smith so they can think they are "stealing" him from the Suns. It is a ploy that has worked before against more sophisticated GM's.

That would only make sense if the Hawks had the #8 pick as well and were coveting Josh Smith and Harris.

Since there is no way Josh Smith falls to #17 the Hawks only have one choice. Take him at #7.

Steve Belkin isn't a fool. He is a close friend and business partner (well they used to be, not sure if they still are) to Larry Bird. He was the person who with Bird, got jacked out of the Bobcat franchise. He will at least have an idea of whats going on.

Billy Knight is the GM of the Hawks. Last year he grabbed Borris Diaw, who is so far being considered a good pick. We aren't going to "fool" anyone into taking someone. It's not like GMs can walk off the street and into the job. Even the worst of them have been around BBall their entire life.

Hard to say. I don't believe the Suns are known for playing games but they are frequently secretive about their selections.

My first thoughts about this, was memories of the Suns bringing Barbosa in at the last minute for a tryout last year and later drafting him.

The athletic talent Josh Smith possesses may be the best in the draft and he might fit the category of best player available. Also perhaps there may be some truth to the Shawn Marion trade rumors. Josh Smith might be a possible candidate to replace Shawn if true.

I defintely agree with that. If the Suns feel they are going to get in serious talks with Orlando in the next day or so, they will most likely shift their focus from a PG to a wing player. (Especially if it costs them both JJ and Marion)

Good point. That may have been one of the reasons of the 2nd workout.
