The Pittsburgh Pirates' offense has been one of the strongest units this season, but as the trade deadline draws closer, could they become even better?
The Pirates' offense has scored 351 runs this season, the fourth-most in the league, while boasting a .254 batting average, the sixth-most in the league. Despite Pittsburgh's explosive offense, the team is sitting at 35-34 just outside of the playoffs, but they are in striking distance of a wild-card playoff spot.
The trade deadline offers the Pirates the chance to bolster their lineup moving forward, and Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer listed the team as a potential fit to trade for Houston Astros slugger Isaac Paredes.
"Whereas Isaac Paredes is merely a safe option for most teams, he would represent a monumental upgrade for the Reds at third base," Rymer wrote on Friday. "The two things he does well are put the ball in play and pull fly balls in the air, both of which would play just fine at Great American Ball Park.
"Better yet, he wouldn't be a one-year rental. If the Reds can't salvage this season, they can try again with Paredes next season. Other Landing Spots: Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates."
Paredes has been named an All-Star in back-to-back seasons and is slashing .236/.332/.406 with nine home runs and 33 runs batted in. Though he's been primarily used as a third baseman by the Astros this season, Paredes is a versatile defender who can play first and second base as well.
Bringing in a bat like Paredes would instantly bolster the Pirates' offense while also giving the team more options. Pittsburgh can utilize the star slugger as a designated hitter or plug him in at various spots as needs arise.
It's been over a decade since the Pirates last made the playoffs. Though trading for Paredes is a big move, Pittsburgh needs to do something to get over the hump in a stacked National League.
