The Pittsburgh Pirates were handed some disappointing news on the injury recovery of star shortstop Konnor Griffin.

Griffin is on the IL with a right forearm and elbow strain, and he was eligible to come off the injured list on June 10. However, the 20-year-old will need more time off, as after consulting with Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Griffin was told to pause his recovery.

However, the Pirates did confirm surgery isn’t needed as Griffin just needs a couple of weeks off.

“All of the clinical exams with subsequent imaging that our team physicians did, that the second-opinion physicians did, all saw the ligament is stable, so that is a very important point,” said Todd Tomczyk, the Pirates' team director of sports medicine. “So there is no concern at this time of any surgery.”

Griffin, meanwhile, said this is is the first injury to his elbow area, so he’s just following all of the doctors orders to make sure he can come back as quickly as possible.

“I've never had any arm problems,” Griffin said. “I pitched in high school, and always felt good. Had a full year last year, felt great. I don't really know what caused it, but I'm just trying to fill it up and get back rolling.”

Griffin is hitting .270 with a .729 OPS, four homers and 14 stolen bases through 51 games.
