Right after Konnor Griffin returned from an injury that kept him out nearly a month, he is right back on the injured list.

Griffin, who rejoined the Pirates' lineup on June 26 after recovering from a right forearm strain, suffered a torn tendon in his left ring finger while making a diving catch against the Nationals on July 5. The Pirates announced that the 20-year-old rookie sensation will not have to undergo surgery, but he will be out for an extended period.

How long will Pittsburgh will have to survive a critical stretch of its postseason push without the star shortstop?

On July 7, Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk announced that the Pirates have placed Griffin on the injured list with a left ring finger injury.

Though Griffin will not need surgery to recover, he will be in a splint for at least a month-and-a-half. He injured his finger on July 5 against the Nationals.

Griffin returned on June 26, hitting .306 with one home run, three RBIs and six stolen bases since coming off the injured list.

How long is Konnor Griffin out?​


According to Tomczyk, Griffin is expected to be out eight to 10 weeks.

"We are estimating about six weeks for this to be splinted," Tomczyk said. "At that time, we'll reassess. So, overall, prognosis for return to full function in about eight to 10 weeks."

While there was an option for Griffin to play, Tomczyk said that the team "learned more" and noted that the best option was "non-operative care, the six weeks of splint and immobilization to make sure that this can properly heal and that it can return to the high function."

If Griffin is out for this estimated amount of time, he would be set to return in September.
