The Philadelphia Phillies lost their first series under Don Mattingly, and it coincided with the three games that Kyle Schwarber was out of the lineup.

In the three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, Schwarber was out due to an illness, and after winning the first game, the Phillies dropped the final two and ended up with their first series loss in some time.

But what actually happened for Schwarber to miss those three games? Tim Kelly of On Pattison shared Schwarber's explanation, which revealed exactly why he was out of the lineup for the Reds series.

Kyle Schwarber missed the Reds series due to illness

"Just a gastrointestinal issue," Schwarber said. "It wasn't like I was out there and got the runs or anything like that. I've dealt with it before, just hasn't really happened in the season before. So I kinda knew what to expect."

Schwarber's absence drew plenty of worries, as the Major League home-run leader with 20 homers was out for an entire series due to illness.

While there seemingly weren't any long-term concerns, until Schwarber got back into the lineup, it was fair to worry about how he'd fare.

Schwarber is back playing designated hitter and hitting second for the Cleveland Guardians series beginning May 22.

He's gotten past the gastrointestinal issues he was dealing with during the Reds series, as he's back in the lineup and looking to continue to be a force for the Phillies.

This explanation from Schwarber helps clear the air on his illness, and it also should give fans confidence in Schwarber returning to form, as this was an issue he's not unfamiliar with and has experience getting over before.
