Paul Pierce comes to Victor Wembanyama's defense after walking off without shaking hands originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After the 2026 NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs received a lot of backlash. They lost the series in five games, which was surprising because people saw them as favorites before the Finals despite not having the experience just yet.
Immediately after the buzzer sounded in Game 5, the Spurs went back to the locker room without shaking the hands of any player from the New York Knicks. This has led to people calling them out for being sore losers.
Paul Pierce has no problem with the Spurs not shaking hands
As a team with the majority of the roster playing in their first postseason run, the Spurs exceeded expectations throughout the season. They were not even in the Playoffs the season before, but they went all the way to the Finals the year after.
It is proof that the Spurs are just getting started. Now, they are being criticized for not shaking hands, which can be considered a natural reaction to a crushing loss. Thankfully, the Spurs have some people defending them, including Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce.

Some people might prefer shaking hands, which is natural. Golden State Warriors legend Draymond Green said as much when he called out Wembanyama and the Spurs. However, Pierce does not subscribe to that idea.
"I've done that many times. I know it's the Finals and it's the last and everything, but you go through so. When we lost, I don't remember shaking hands in 2010. I think I walked off too, nobody said nothing about that," Pierce said on Ticket & The Truth with him and Kevin Garnett.
It is a valid point because the Knicks were going to celebrate either way. Former Spurs player Jeremy Sochan chasing them down the tunnel was a bad look, but it is normal for the Spurs to feel that way. Thankfully for their fans, the players will only get motivated by that.
