Victor Wembanyama has already forced his way into every major NBA conversation. MVP debates. Defensive Player of the Year discussions.Future face-of-the-league debates. Now, with the San Antonio Spurs heading to the NBA Finals after knocking out the Oklahoma City Thunder, the glare around the 22-year-old star has only gotten brighter.

That growing hype got another boost this week when NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce made a bold statement. Speaking after the Spurs’ Western Conference Finals victory, Pierce argued that Wembanyama has already separated himself from every other superstar in basketball, and believes a championship would remove any remaining doubt.

When asked where Wembanyama stacks up against today’s elite players, Pierce didn’t hesitate, placing the Spurs phenom at the very top of the league’s hierarchy, while names like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic remain at the forefront of MVP discussions.

“Like when I look at all the players, line them up everybody in the league who you taking number one? Joker? No. Shai? It’s Victor for sure.”
Paul Pierce says if Wemby wins the championship, he’s the unquestioned best player in the league:

This statement is important in its timing. The Spurs are coming off a playoff run where they won a seven-game Western Conference Finals series against the Thunder, outgunning current MVP favorite Gilgeous-Alexander on the biggest stage.

That’s where the split starts for Pierce. During multiple appearances and podcast discussions throughout the season, he has consistently argued that Wembanyama’s impact extends beyond traditional numbers. Offensively, the 7-foot-4 star can stretch defenses, handle the ball and create shots few players even attempt. Defensively, he alters entire game plans before opponents cross half-court.

Pierce even suggested that Wembanyama is doing things the league has never witnessed from a player his age.

That is an enormous statement considering the names Pierce included in the comparison. LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Jokic were all mentioned while discussing Wembanyama’s all-around influence on both ends of the floor. His belief is not based solely on talent.Pierce has repeatedly cited the Spurs’ rise as evidence.

Most projections before the season had the Spurs as a play-in team at best. Instead, they soared to the upper reaches of the Western Conference standings and are now four victories away from a title. Wembanyama and Pierce attribute that leap largely. Earlier this year, he even supported the French superstar over Gilgeous-Alexander in the MVP race, saying a player’s value should be measured by whether he exceeds expectations.

The latest playoff run has only reinforced that position. Gilgeous-Alexander is still one of the best guards in the game and Jokic is still putting up historic numbers, but Pierce says neither has the size, skill, defensive dominance and versatile game-changing ability. Now the Finals present Wembanyama with another opportunity. If he finishes the job and delivers a championship to the Spurs, Pierce believes the conversation changes completely. Neither the future best player nor a potential best player but the best player in basketball.
