The New York Knicks won the National Basketball Association championship on Sunday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games to end a 53-year title drought for the franchise. The final game ended 94-90, and fans celebrated the historic achievement inside the arena.
However, an unexpected postgame moment quickly shifted attention away from the trophy presentation. Media analysts spent the following morning debating the actions of one specific player.
Victor Wembanyama walked directly to the locker room when the final buzzer sounded and did not participate in the customary postgame greetings on the court. Knicks star Jalen Brunson sought out the Spurs center to exchange words, but Wembanyama had already exited the floor.
Only Luke Kornet remained on the court to congratulate members of the opposing roster. Basketball commentators immediately noticed Wembanyama's departure, and the decision became a major talking point across television and social media on Monday.
Analysts offered sharply different views on the situation. Jay Williams defended the departure during a morning broadcast.
"Shaking hands is what you do when you're in the little leagues," Williams said.
Williams argued that professional athletes compete for championships and should not be obligated to participate in postgame greetings after a painful defeat. Conversely, Stephen A. Smith criticized the decision on the same program.
Chris Canty also called the exit inappropriate for a marquee player. Several former players noted that stars have traditionally acknowledged opponents after a championship series, regardless of the outcome.
Wembanyama addressed reporters during his mandatory postgame press conference and expressed deep disappointment over the loss. The Spurs center described the defeat as an important learning experience and said watching the Knicks celebrate would fuel his offseason preparation.
He did not directly explain why he left the court before the customary postgame exchanges took place. As a result, his departure remained one of the most discussed storylines following the Knicks' championship victory.
