EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It was a true beatdown by the New England Patriots on Sunday as they defeated the New York Jets, 42-10. And while head coach Mike Vrabel ultimately made the decision to take out Drake Maye in the third quarter following a five touchdown performance, it was clear throughout the first half that he didn't want his team taking their foot off the pedal.
That became especially clear with a call he made towards the end of the second quarter.
With the Patriots holding a 35-3 lead, New England kicked a touchback with 31 seconds remaining in the half. New York Jets quarterback Brady Cook then completed a nine-yard pass, and New York took a timeout trying to add some more points to the board before time ran out. However, on the following play, Cook got sacked with 19 seconds to go.
Many expected the clock to just run from there, and the two teams would depart for the locker room. Instead, Vrabel decided to call a timeout, forcing the Jets to run one more play.
After the game, Patriots Wire asked Vrabel about this call.
“Well, I mean, just trying to think and work the game and, regardless of what the score was, but forcing them to run another play or do something and they don’t carry over to the second half,” Vrabel explained. "So, defensively, we hadn’t had a whole lot of opportunities to play. Those guys want to rush, they want to play defense and so I called it and, you know, really didn’t affect the game.”
