He's expendable because he's in the 7th year of playing for this franchise, is not improving, and not making the team better. This is like Jared Goff when he was with the Rams. He was just mediocre and not helping the team. Perhaps a new team makes Kyler better, but it's not going to happen here and he needs to go.
What do you even lose? in 7 years, he's taken us to one playoff game, the most embarrassing playoff performance I've ever seen. He's obviously not the guy to elevate a team, and we've tried several coaches/personnel groups under his control.

Kyler is good enough for you to make excuses to keep him around, and bad enough where you'll never win anything of significance with him at the helm. Even if we are worse in the short term, what's the point of more of this boredom? Also - how did they turn one of the most exciting QB's in recent memory into such a non-compelling watch?

He’s a purgatory QB, if that’s even a thing. I admire what the Rams did with Goff because it took balls to trade him away with assets to get a better QB, which got them a natty. I hate that this franchise coddles him like he’s Lamar Jackson. He needs to be held accountable, and I think with how JG has handled Petzing, we’re starting to see that accountability is an area of concern for him.

What is being “held accountable”?

Benching?

Kyler isn’t awful to be benched.
lol this thread gets more out of hand w the small handful of posters just talking to themselves telling everyone how bad kyler sucks.. w zero context as the the roster composition, WR drops and most of all playcalling.

If the WRs (and RB), simply caught easy expected catches last week.. this crew would be silent as fuuuuudge

He's Andy Dalton, except Andy Dalton had 5 winning seasons and Dalton twice broke 4000 yards passing.

Some are going to react "He's far better than Dalton" but he's not. Dalton had 3 Pro Bowls in his 6 years. Got to the playoffs 4 years in a row and lost in the Wildcard round each time.

Honestly, this is doing Dalton a disservice.

Just lol dude. Kyler has like 2 games with drops and it's the drops fault. What about the other 6 years? Certainly the last 3. For every drop there's a dozen crappy reads and missed opportunities.

Many on this site disagree with that.

Nah, I don't think he should be benched. Although I wouldn't mind seeing him miss a game so we can see Brissett in this offense for comparison. If Brisset came in and had a 7.5 YPA and 250+ yards passing what would you say?

You'd say "Why did Petzing open up the playbook for Brissett?"

"There's nobody open downfield"

Get. In. The. Bin.

There's an obvious flaw when watching Kyler and it's that he comes off his reads way early. Despite being super clean he's through read 1 (Zay) before he's clearly open, he's through read 2 (Marv), Although considering Marv is running a comeback I think it's there for him to throw, and just goes to his no hope check down.

We punt 2 plays later.

I mean, I’m ready to move on from Kyler. I’ve made that clear. I’m ready for the unknown. It’s been time.

That unknown could be us being the Browns, though, lol.
This could be another longgg term project.

Again, I’m making it clear I’m ready to move on.

I’m not ready to move on. It’s very sad for me. The prospect of being the Browns or Colts or Jets is too harrowing.

Maybe with a different leadership group I’d feel differently. But my philosophy has consistently been make it to the dance and you’ll never know what happens. I’m not ready to give up on Kyler’s potential to grow and win a playoff game or two.

It's year 7, how long do you wait for the potential to show?

Why TF do we run so much 13 personnel?

the idea was you force the defense to have it's base run defense on the field and you then get your best receiver, McBride, in a mismatch. I love McBride but if we reduce our usage of 13, which I think we will, his production will probably go down as he'll get less favorable matchups

But the idea was force people to honor the run and then exploit mismatches in the passing game.

I guess where I fall is if Monti/Gannon can't make the playoffs with a 14-18 ranked QB, I need them all to go. I have no interest in retaining a below average GM and/or HC and trusting them to waste more years.

I fully expect us to continue to stay competitive and in the playoff picture.

If we could get the bounty for Kyler that Seattle got for Russ, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Would I trade him for the third Seattle got for Geno? Ask me at the end of the year.

The Vikes had a plan for the future when they let both Cousins and Darnold walk as free agents. I’m just not ready to opt in to more terrible football. Who’s our most marketable offensive player if Kyler leaves?

Not that I don't agree with having a plan but that plan was JJ McCarthy who was awful, got hurt and they then went to Wentz and put up over 40 points the first game without him.

Better to be lucky than good sometimes.

Too soon to say anything about McCarty but we get that you hate him.

I don’t know man, I just think this is Kyler, well, this current Kyler is less wreckless, but too conservative & boring. This is just who he is.

But I also did get a chuckle from TJ’s post about the QBs we could have gotten in 2020. We will never get that lucky, & two of those QBs named, I highly doubt their careers play out the same if they were drafted here.

I expect this franchise to always get it wrong until proved otherwise.

Came off his reads before the play even had a chance to develop. Maybe he's just incapable of playing in a rhythm offense.

I think Kyler will do what he’s told, but will do EXACTLY as he’s told even if/when it doesn’t make intuitive sense. Throwing and completing deep passes is fun — he should want to do that. He didn’t have a crazy INT rate as a rookie. I feel like he’s always been pretty diligent about protecting the ball.

But he’s also been real diligent about protecting his completion percentage, and that’s why, IMO, he doesn’t take risks downfield, doesn’t throw as many TDs as you’d like, and runs out of bounds for a loss instead of throwing the ball away.

The biggest thing for me is how he’s played four full seasons and never surpassed 4000 passing yards. That’s just not good enough.

This is fair.

It’s just time to get it wrong with someone else at QB. That’s where I’m at. It’s as simple and admittedly, kinda as stupid, as that.

It's not too early, the team is better with Wentz than him. He may eventually be a good QB but they weren't going anywhere with him as the starter.

THat's wy many of us are so hesitant to just unload Kyler for magic beans and draft a guy in the first round, we MIGHT get a great QB, or we might get McCarty or Bo Nix

Yep. We got it wrong with the Rosen one (one of my bad player calls) and moved on fairly quickly. We are waaaay behind moving on from Kyler.

Of course it is. The McCarthy experiment has an n of 2. You’re blinded by inexplicable hatred of him. So lame and sad.
