In a back-and-forth game that included 20 runs, 24 hits and seven home runs, Oregon ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Wisconsin as the Ducks were eliminated from the Big Ten softball tournament May 7 in College Park, Maryland.
How that loss impacts the Ducks' postseason path will be unveiled at 4 p.m. Sunday when the NCAA selection show takes place on ESPN2.
Stefini Ma’ake had two homers and five RBIs for No. 2 seed Oregon, which lost 11-9 to the No. 7 Badgers in a quarterfinal game Thursday.
It was the second straight season the Ducks (40-12) lasted just one game at the conference tournament despite a top-two seed.
Oregon rebounded from its Big Ten tournament disappointment last season to host an NCAA regional and super regional en route to the Women's College World Series.
"Any time something doesn't go our way, this group knows how to respond, and I expect them to fully respond and be ready to go for postseason," Oregon coach Melyssa Lombardi told GoDucks.com after the loss to the Badgers. "I love this group. I believe in this group. This group is really, really good. Today was a tough day for us, but you have to leave it, and you've got to move on to be ready for what's next."
Oregon rallied from a 4-0 deficit Thursday to take a 5-4 lead in the second inning and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-7. But Wisconsin scored once in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh to build an 11-8.
Ma’ake’s second homer – a lead-off shot in the seventh – made it 11-9 but the Ducks went down in order after that to end the game.
Oregon’s pitchers were dominated by Wisconsin batters as the Badgers had 15 hits, four home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs and scored in every inning but the second.
Three times the Badgers homered to lead off an inning, including in the seventh when Hannah Conger left the park to pad Wisconsin’s lead.
The Badgers scored four in the first inning to set the tone for the high-scoring game.
"That was tough," Lombardi said. "We just didn't have the ability to contain them today."
