On June 30, 2025, the Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a then-blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. One year later, we at Steelers Wire have revisited the trade to figure out which team came out on top.
Ramsey finished the season at safety following key injuries to Pittsburgh's secondary and was solid in his debut season with the Steelers, recording 88 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, eight passes defended, and one interception. Smith, however, failed to live up to expectations, recording just 38 receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Smith would be released following the 2025 season.
Fitzpatrick found success in his return season with the Dolphins, recording 82 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, four passes defended, one forced fumble, and one interception. He also eclipsed the 80.0 mark in regard to his overall PFF grade, the second time in his career he reached that feat. The Dolphins traded Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets this offseason, where he signed a three-year, $40 million extension.
Honestly, the Dolphins may have beat out the Steelers here. Ramsey is a tremendous talent, but so is Fitzpatrick. If those were the only pieces in the trade, it would be a tie. But the Steelers also gave up a fifth-round pick and only received seventh-round pick and Smith in return, who actually hurt the team more than helped, as his arrival led to talented tight end Pat Freiermuth seeing a reduced role early in 2025. Revisiting this trade one year later, the Dolphins get the win here.
