The North Carolina Tar Heels received a major boost to their men's basketball roster on Tuesday, when new guard Matt Able withdrew himself from the 2026 NBA Draft.
Able transferred in from NC State earlier this offseason, continuing a recent pipeline between the two rivals. With UNC's offseason backcourt departures, Able's initial commitment all but guaranteed him a starting spot.
On Wednesday, North Carolina officially signed Able to its 2026-27 roster, giving the former Wolfpack guard his first starting opportunity in Michael Malone's first year as head coach.
Able played in all 34 games for State a season ago, averaging 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 per game. Tar Heel fans should also be excited about Able's perimeter and free throw shooting abilities, with the Baltimore (Md.) native going 35.5 percent from deep and 79.6% from the charity stripe.
Despite a new-look roster, Able will be joining former high school teammate Kevin Thomas, a late addition who previously committed to LSU. Able and Thomas played together at Sagemont Prep in Weston (Fla.), leading their team to the 1-A State Title.
UNC also welcomes newcomers Terrence Brown (Utah), Neoklis Avdalas (Virginia Tech), Sayon Keita (FC Barcelona), Maximo Adams (2026 recruiting class), Malloy Smith (2026 recruiting class) and Cade Bennerman (Northwestern) to Chapel Hill. Jarin Stevenson, Isaiah Denis and Jaydon Young all return from last year's roster, giving North Carolina a bit of familiarity.
The Tar Heels may not be done adding to their 2026-27 roster yet, with a decision from Greek forward Alexandros Samodurov expect soon. After a slow start to his first offseason, Malone's first go-round as UNC's head coach is shaping up to be an exciting one.
