Nearly two months into the college basketball offseason, UNC still awaits several player decisions that'll impact its 2026-27 roster.
On Tuesday, the Tar Heels received a massive decision from a previous offseason addition. NC State transfer Matt Able, who thrived with multiple big outings at the NBA Combine, officially withdrew his name from the Draft and will play at North Carolina.
Able had a Wednesday deadline to make this decision, but now has a crystal-clear answer for Tar Heel Nation. According to InsideCarolina, Able is expected to arrive on campus Tuesday.
Michael Malone has several months to decide Able's role in UNC's lineup, but expect the former Wolfpack guard to be a Day One starter, especially with his recent performances against fellow NBA hopefuls. Able appeared in 34 games for Will Wade a season ago, averaging 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 35.5 percent from deep and nearly 80% on free throws.
Given his 6-foot-6 frame, Able provides versatility to play anywhere 1-4 for North Carolina. Able can thrive as point guard in a taller lineup, play power forward in a smaller lineup, shooting guard or wing on the regular.
The Tar Heels will likely rotate Neoklis Avdalas, Maximo Adams and Kevin Thomas between on-court positions. Able's withdrawal now giving UNC a deep group at the guard/forward slot.
North Carolina isn't done adding to its roster yet, with a decision from Greek forward Alexandros Samodurov likely coming soon. Malone's vision for Tar Heel basketball continues to work, with Able's crucial decision the latest example of that.
