THOMASVILLE — Oak Grove is one of four county schools that will have new boys soccer coaches next season.

Juan Valencia, who is new to Oak Grove, takes over after one year leading Lexington High School’s program. The 39-year old native of Columbia attended high school in the Charlotte area at North Mecklenburg and played college soccer at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington.

“I’ve coached club with U15 and U16 in the DCYSA and some of my players are at Oak Grove,” Valencia said. “I became more interested to be in this part of the county so I applied for the job. I don’t know much about the program but we will begin workouts soon and I’ll get to know the kids better.”

The Grizzlies struggled through a 5-17-3 record last season.

“I know last season there were some challenges winning games,” said Valencia, who is not on staff at the school but works for Cushman & Wakefield in property management. “I’m very excited about this opportunity. With my background and my style of play, you’re going to see pro-active possession soccer. It’s going to be very organized and we’re going to have fun.”

Other new boys soccer coaches are Charles Bradley for West Davidson, Daniel Parker for North Davidson and Madison Beane for Central Davidson.

Bradley was a longtime assistant coach at Central Davidson from 2005 to 2021 and was a high school head coach in the mid-1990s near his hometown of Buffalo. He also coached for one year (1997) at Jamestown Community College in New York. Parker will moves over from cross country coach at North Davidson to assume leadership with the North Davidson soccer program. He has also been a track coach at North and served as an assistant football coach going back to the days when Mark Holcomb led the program. Beane is making the jump from assistant coach to head coach at Central. The 29-year-old has been an assistant with the girls program for the past four years and boys program for the last two. Beane is a 2015 Central grad and played softball for the Spartans. She is on staff as a math teacher and will be taking over the program from Alan Reavis, who is continuing on as girls’ soccer coach.
