Jay Flanagan is going to experience life down the shore in the wintertime.
The longtime boys’ basketball coach in Burlington County was approved for the same position at Lower Cape May High School by the board of education on Wednesday.
Flanagan, who spends his summers in North Wildwood, recently retired as a teacher and coach at Rancocas Valley after two decades. He led the Red Devils to a 15-14 record last winter, raising his win total to 350 with the RV program in 20 years.
“I am excited for this new opportunity,” Flanagan said in an email on Wednesday night. “I never thought I would leave RV but things have changed there with a new administration. I had a great 20 years there and will truly miss it.
“I cannot thank my former players who stayed loyal to the program over the years enough for their support. I am still so close to many of them. The next two years will be very strong for RV basketball. The returning players are great young men with a lot of promise. I wish them nothing but the best and I will surely be one of their biggest fans from afar.
“We were 22-28 the two years before I arrived in 2006, so I have left the program in much better shape than what I inherited.”
Flanagan is no stranger to the Jersey Shore.
“I just retired from teaching along with my wife, Dawn. We have a second home in North Wildwood and this opportunity was too good to pass up. Coach (Scott) Holden did an outstanding job with this program the past 16 years. I will just try to continue to represent the school as well as he did and put a group of young men on the floor that play the right way.
"I can’t wait to get started and work for such a great administration that strongly supports its sports’ programs and coaches.”
Overall, Flanagan is the eleventh winningest boys’ basketball coach (fifth active) in South Jersey history, compiling a career record of 533-388 during his 35-year career which also included stints at Riverside, Moorestown Friends and Burlington Township.
Flanagan also coached girls’ soccer at Burlington Township and Rancocas Valley and was inducted into the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Flanagan takes over a Lower Cape May program that went 23-6 last season, which included a trip to the South Jersey Group 2 semifinal round. He replaces Scott Holden, who won 210 games over his 16-year tenure.
