PHILADELPHIA — The Mets starting rotation's regular hiccups have killed any chance of regular momentum as the season approaches the halfway mark.
Freddy Peralta is one of the culprits as he's allowed four earned runs or more in four of his last six starts. Saturday night was as bad as it has gotten for the veteran right-hander, who gave up a career-high 10 earned runs in a 15-3 loss to the Phillies.
David Peterson will be aiming to buck that trend as he returns to the Mets starting rotation for their series finale against the Phillies at 7:20 p.m. on Sunday night at Citizens Bank Park.
The Mets left-hander has been one of the club's chief perpetrators of up-and-down performances. In two relief appearances in June, Peterson has given up nine earned runs in 6⅔ innings. In his last start back on May 26 against the Reds, Peterson surrendered six earned runs on 11 hits and three walks in five innings.
The Mets will need some shade of improvement from Peterson if they hope to grab the three-game series win over the Phillies and notch a .500 road trip, particularly given who is on the other side for the Phillies on Sunday. Zack Wheeler is due to make his 11th start, carrying a 6-1 record and 2.01 ERA since his return from shoulder surgery in late April.
