NEW YORK — The Mets have one last chance to finish the first half on a high note.
Saturday afternoon's performance left a lot to be desired, with the Mets poking three total hits and Freddy Peralta lasting 4⅓ innings in a 4-0 loss.
It clinched another series loss for the Mets as they head into the finale at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.
The Mets enter the game having lost two straight and at 40-56 on the season, while the Red Sox have won eight straight to move to 45-48.
The Mets have gone back to the minor leagues to fill in their final spot in their starting rotation.
Zach Thornton is on tap to make his third career start on Sunday after he last turned in a quality start against the Phillies back on June 26. He allowed one earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven in six innings.
Thornton enters with a 4.36 ERA after allowing four earned runs in 4⅓ innings in his debut against the Nationals on May 20.
The Mets will be facing a left-hander for the second straight game as Payton Tolle makes his 15th start of the season for the Red Sox. Tolle enters with a 5-6 record, 3,14 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
