The series opener between the Mets and Red Sox will go on as planned despite multiple reports of issues with the latter's travel between Chicago and New York.
A report by The Boston Globe's Tim Healey noted that the Red Sox had not left the Midwest with about four hours until the scheduled 7:15 p.m. first pitch against the Mets on Friday night at Citi Field.
The Mets are coming off their first series victory in nearly a month as they took down the Royals, 7-3, in the series finale on Thursday afternoon. The club received a seven-inning quality start from Sean Manaea and home runs from Juan Soto and Tyrone Taylor in the win.
The Mets (40-54) have won four of their last five games entering their final series before the All-Star break. The Red Sox (43-48) are on the rise as well, entering this weekend's action on a six-game win streak after back-to-back sweeps against the White Sox and Angels.
It is a marquee pitching matchup as All-Star snub Sonny Gray goes up against the Mets' Nolan McLean.
The Mets rookie right-hander is 6-5 with a 3.73 ERA and 1.12 WHIP and is coming off a quality start against the Braves. He allowed two earned runs (three total) on five hits and one walk while striking out five batters in six innings to secure the win.
Gray enters his 17th start of the season with a 10-1 record, 2.61 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. The right-hander is on a run of seven straight quality starts. He allowed one earned run on a home run with seven strikeouts in six innings in his latest start against the Angels. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in an outing since April 14.
