A dormant rivalry is set to return in 2026 for Northeastern State University football.

Friday, June 26, NSU will face off with Langston University for the first time since 1996. Starting in 1958, the programs competed 32 times when both were members of the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference and Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference.

The RiverHawks travel to Langston Saturday, Oct. 31, for week nine of the season at 2 p.m.

“We are excited to reunite this historic in-state football rivalry with Langston University,” NSU Director of Athletics John Sisemore said in a press release. “Two Oklahoma institutions with similar missions and rich histories will once again meet on the football field, creating an exciting opportunity for our student-athletes, alumni and fans."

The game is not set to be a one-and-done situation, with LU coming to Tahlequah in 2027 for a game that will be announced at a later date. The program intends to create a traveling trophy for what has been dubbed the Oklahoma Gridiron Classic.

“This is more than just a football game; it’s the beginning of renewing a great Oklahoma tradition,” Sisemore said. “We are excited to develop an official name for the rivalry and create a traveling trophy that both programs can compete for each year, adding another chapter to the proud history of both universities.”

With the creation of the trophy and rivalry, the game effectively replaces the President’s Cup vs. the University of Central Oklahoma. NSU won last season’s President’s Cup, with no future game slated at the time.

After finishing the season 9-3 last season, the RiverHawks and head coach Darrin Chiaverini will head into the season looking to carry a seven-game winning streak vs. Delta State, Saturday, Aug. 29.
