The Cincinnati Reds dropped the rubber game of their three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-3. Cincinnati used three hits to beat Arizona on Saturday afternoon, with a Noelvi Marte homer. Despite the fact that Marte hit his third home run in three games on Sunday afternoon, Cincinnati couldn't sustain enough offense to top the D-backs.
JJ Bleday greeted Arizona starter Zac Gallen, who entered the game with a 3-5 record and a 5.43 ERA, with a solo home run into right field in the first inning. Bleday is hitting .265 with 11 home runs and 41 hits on the year as he continues to make his case to be an All-Star in his first season with the Reds.
In the second inning, Matt McLain and Jose Trevino, who was just reinstated from the injured list, posted back-to-back singles. Tommy Troy robbed Edwin Arroyo of a single and a potential RBI, and then Gallen recorded a huge strikeout against Blake Dunn to end the inning and escape the jam.
Troy continued to help the D-backs in the next inning, hitting a home run just inside the left-field foul pole to tie the game.
Eugenio Suarez responded with a double off the right-center-field wall, scoring Nathaniel Lowe from first base.
Tejay Antone came on in relief of Andrew Abbott, who had five strikeouts, three walks and allowed just one run in five innings of work. He is now 4-4 on the season with a 3.95 ERA. Geraldo Perdomo launched a two-run shot over the right-field fence, a no-doubter, giving Arizona a 3-2 lead. Nathaniel Lowe's error on the batter before gave Perdomo the opportunity.
Noelvi Marte entered the game red hot, and he stayed hot, hitting a no-doubter to tie the game at 3-all. He has hit homers in three straight games.
Zach Maxwell came on in the eighth inning and allowed a wall-scraper to Gabriel Moreno, giving Arizona the lead right back, 4-3.
Cincinnati threatened in the eighth inning, as Sal Stewart and Spencer Steer both reached safely. After a wild pitch, both runners moved up a base, setting up a great chance for the Reds to score with runners on second and third and one out. However, Eugenio Suarez and Marte struck out to end the inning.
The Diamondbacks added an insurance run in the ninth inning, ultimately sealing a 5-3 win and taking the series from the Reds. Cincinnati has not won a series in June.
