conner has been petzing's rock and comfort blanket - his all purpose swiss army knife and captain on the field - all of that is gone now

but what we saw and what a couple have mentioned was the new playbook yesterday after conner's season ending injury - looked like the condoms came off - or at least until the last drive where i believe petzing was feeling very connerless

but... with conner being conner - he's installed a lot of his knowledge upon trey benson who let's face it - got some burst to his game - benson will now become petzing's focal point and im sure k9 just can't wait

regardless- even before the injury benson was beginning to get his share of not just carries but snaps and passes - pass protection assignments - chipping and leaking out - i think benson might be ready for this

lastly - and i'll probably take a bunch of ish for saying this but our offense might be close - the dropped passes - delays - tds called back - holding penalties - if we can clean up our mistakes i think our offense begins to take shape - and we don't have to worry about the same old same old (not a diss on conner but on petzing) because our most used piece is now completely off the table

of course a lot of this depends on our o-line but that's another matter

it feels bad to say this in the wake of a terrible injury for JC

but it looked to me like he had lost a step this year. there were plays in space where i thought he would turn the corner and instead was caught.

Benson had a diff issue -- we wants to juke when he needs to get north/south

Petzing should be coaching for his job on Thursday (though in reality he’s not). Let it freaking rip. Benson will find a splash run here and there but he still had a bad habit of running east/west. It’s up to Petzing to open up this offense and air it out.

Same.

JC has been meh to start. Now, a lot of that has to do with our poor run-blocking I believe, but he has definitely lost a step.

I’m pretty sure our two longest runs this season have been by Benson. Looking forward to see him as the primary back.

only a few days to prepare before seattle too - good thing is i don't think they'll know what to expect from us for once but they'll definitely be in our backfield for 4 quarters

i don't know what to expect from us - benson better not hesitate back there tho

Benson progressing and being able to handle more responsibilities looks good on monti - same for the coaching staff developing him but we shall see

The Cards want to be a run first team. With Connor out this becomes problematic. I talked about my Petzing concerns on the WR thread. I have them here as well. I mentioned briefly on the Sunday game thread that the blocking was not what Benson needed. The running play design is oriented to Connor’s style of running, not Benson’s.

Connor is an elite power runner who overwhelms would be tacklers with force. Benson is more about quickness and cuts. What some are calling dancing, Benson simply goes to the point of supposed attack and finds no opening. He needs a gap. He has some power, but he’s not going to knock back DTs. Now this doesn’t mean if Connor runs straight into a DT, he’ll knock him over. Most DTs make tackles when engaged with a blocker they reach out and grab a runner; holding on. This hardly ever works with Connor. He just plows through them. Benson needs more space. Part of this is on the Oline. Part of this is on running play design. Pre-snap movement can get the Dline out of position or at least off balance. Double-teaming, perhaps with Reiman in motion and hitting a hole first might work. Maybe using a power back (not on current roster) or H-back to hit the line first. Trap blocking might be useful. Pulling linemen better uses Benson’s skill set. Options where Murray could pullout the ball and run himself could confuse the defense or even pitch-outs. The new running game must include more finesse. Benson can breaks tackles, especially past the line of scrimmage, but he’d rather avoid them. In two games he’s broken two long runs. That’s Benson’s game.

Benson is also decent as a pass receiver, but he’s only employed as an outlet. For the most part the defense is all over him as the ball arrives. Murray telegraphs his near panic. When have you ever seen Murray take a hit to make a completion?

When Connor went out, so did the running game. These plays are simply not effective or designed for a normal RB. As to the Oline, Adams is terrible in all respects. Between him and Froholdt the A gap is too often deeply penetrated. Runners are frequently hit in the backfield. They need more audibles when teams jam the box. This is a bad offense. I don’t see it getting fixed by Thursday.

A run first offense which is the 3rd least successful team at running the ball. Doesn't portend for good things moving forward, unless this means they take the handcuffs off of Murray and see if he can run a real offense.

Clearly this offense need more Tip Reiman. "Just the Tip baby!!!" should be the new offensive philosophy.
could tip be petzing's new bulldozer in short yardage situations? cuz unless benson is part dolphin... lol i don't see him powering thru goalline situations - plus dolphins tend to fumble when leaping over the line

I just have an issue with the oline being the problem. Understand, they seem to stink right now. But wasn’t this the same 5 that racked up 150 rushing yards/game the last five games of the season last year? What’s different? klayton Adams is in Dallas. And he’s already taken a unit that averaged 100 yards rushing per game last year to 125 yards rushing per game (albeit only 3 games) this year. BIG RED FLAG HERE.

And I know Adam’s has stunk but it’s not even been a year since Hernandez tore up his knee. What makes anyone think he’s ready to be a road grader?

I missed my draft so my original roster was auto drafted but I picked up Skattebo after someone cut him(?). So I had both Benson and Skattebo in fact I started Benson all 3 games because RJ Harvey, who it auto drafted BEFORE Benson, isn't yet starting in Denver(if at all). So I have both guys who became RB1 yesterday due to injury

Conners 3 longest runs this year were 12, 9 and 8 so combined that's 29 yards. Benson had a 29 yard run yesterday.

The issue is consistently hitting the hole hard and if not there put your head down and get what you can. for example after the PI, with Gaines in at FB we didnt' block it well and Benson doesn't score, he hit the hole hard but the defense stuffed it, I still feel like Conner probably scores on that one though?

I think what Harry said is true, they will have to tweak the offense to fit Benson's running style. I also think we're going to see more things like wheel routes or swing routes to Benson on the move, if Kyler can deliver them because he's a good receiver and much faster. I think the concern becomes how Benson handles all the decisions you have to make as a RB1. Conner knew when to pick up the blitz when to chip and run the pattern etc. Benson is still learning that stuff I expect we'll see teams blitz just to see how Benson holds up

I think we may use less 3 TE in fact we did yesterday and I think we might going forward. Without Connner we're less inclined to power the ball. That could open up the pass game.

I fully expect Carter to be RB2 not DeMercado or Knight.

The loss of Conner is massive. Hernandez can’t get back fast enough. I too believe Carter will be the backup. Would like to see Bam get a chance but this game against Seattle may be too much for him.

Benson better be ready after being drafted high and getting more carries with JC out.

Zero reason he can't be a 100yard rusher but the oline has me concerned that they have also lost their mojo.

I see the Sea Chickens embarrasing us and maybe P Guy will be fired the next day.

Carter would be a no-brainer if his pass protection was better. I do think he is the best receiving RB now that Conner is lost. That said Benson is gonna get most of the reps and should.
