This is one of my favorite movies of all-time. Matthew Modine plays Louden, a high school wrestler. During his senior year he decides to drop two weight classes to wrestle the baddest guy in the state, Shute. Despite everyone telling him that he’s crazy, he has his mind set on his goal and nothing will stop him.

It has the “required” 80’s romance with Linda Fiorentino. She’s passing through town and serves as a temporary distraction to his training. However, at the end she provides the final speech to fire him up, “Hey Louden, kick his ass.”

His coworker, Elmo (J.C. Quinn) is a classic. He has pretty much lost all desire to succeed in life and has accepted that things just are as they are. However, he really breaks down and tells Louden how important these six minutes on the mat will mean to the rest of his life.

And of course you have “heartthrob” Michael Schoeffling (who last I heard was now a furniture builder) as Kuch. Louden’s best friend and who smokes his “pipe” and talks to spirits. He’s the one that tells Louden that he’s on a Vision Quest.

Some other cast members include Ronny Cox, Harold Sylvester, Daphne Zuniga, and Forest Whitaker. Madonna also makes an appearance and sings a few songs for the film.

Per Amazon:

Plot Summary

Genres: Drama, Romance, Sport
Plot Synopsis: Vision Quest is a coming of age movie in which high school wrestler Louden Swain (Matthew Modine) decides he wants to be something more than an average high school athlete and sets his sights on a prize that many don't think he can win -- he then sets out to reach his goal alone, without much support from his father or coach. His father rents a room to a young drifter, Carla (Linda Fiorentino). Swain falls in love with her and she helps him stay focused and prevents him from losing sight of his goals. Although a lower-budget film than Flashdance or Top Gun, this movie is similar in theme and style. Madonna makes her first appearance in a major motion picture as a lead singer in a local band performing her hit songs "Crazy For You" and "Gambler".
